Mengxian Ying: Nyliis Studio Hamilton Gallery 2026 Artist-in-Residence

About this event

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery is pleased to announce Mengxian Ying, the artist pen named Nyliis, as the Department of Art and Art History’s 2026 Artist-in-Residence.

The Chinese illustrator Mengxian Ying will relocate her Nyliis Studio from Sichuan Province in China to Salve Regina’s Hamilton Gallery for two weeks following the Thanksgiving holiday. During this time, she will share her creative process with the Salve community and stimulate new opportunities for dialogue, interaction, and learning on campus.

Nyliis illustrates original characters and custom costume designs for unique fictional worlds. Through her engagement with drawing, the history of fashion, and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture, she breathes life into a wide array of classic and vintage characters. Her studio works with a broad client base to invent new characters for both private commissions and commercial applications.

During her time as artist-in-residence, Nyliis will focus on her own personal cast of original and fictional characters. She joins the Salve community as an international artist and scholar who recently received her B.F.A. degree from Rhode Island School of Design in Illustration.

As the Department of Art and Art History’s Artist-in-Residence, Mengxian Ying: Nyliis Studio will work in the Hamilton Gallery daily, from December 1 through 11, 2026, during the Gallery’s public hours of operation.

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery is located in the Antone Academic Center on the campus of Salve Regina University. It is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy Avenues. Its exhibits are open Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays 11:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays noon to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays.
