  • Meals on Wheels of RI delivered its 21-millionth home meal in March 2025 and launched a Veterans Café under its dining program — the nonprofit continues expanding services and recruiting volunteers to help residents maintain healthy, independent lifestyles.  The Providence Journal
  • Lisa Pina-Warren, the first female executive director of the Nonviolence Institute, shared her vision for RI’s 2050 future in a recent interview. Her plan focuses on advancing nonviolent approaches + long-term community solutions.  The Providence Journal

  • Farouk Rajab of the hospitality group said RI tourism will change by 2050 as AI, ghost kitchens + food delivery apps may reshape hotels and restaurants; he stressed that investing in skilled workers is key as the July 2026 World Cup is expected to boost cultural training.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • RI Historical Society Director C. Morgan Grefe said new technology will transform how local history is preserved and shared by 2050 — digital archives and interactive exhibits will help residents connect with our past.  The Providence Journal
  • Astronomy lovers in Warwick can look forward to a busy 2026 as Jupiter shines bright on Jan. 10 — the year also brings a total lunar eclipse on Mar. 3 and a partial solar eclipse on Aug. 12, with meteor showers and planetary alignments scheduled throughout.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting in the new year, about 50,000 Rhode Islanders earning minimum wage will see their rate rise to $16 an hour (Gov. Dan McKee signed a law in August that increases wages by one dollar until 2027).  WJAR

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health released preliminary 2025 baby name data early this morning, showing Noah (63) and Charlotte (51) as the top names for boys and girls. The final birth data will be released in February.  The Providence Journal

  • Cold temperatures and 3 inches of fresh snow drew new visitors to Yawgoo Valley Ski area on Jan. 1 as families enjoyed the trails — lesson programs begin today.  WJAR
