COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members and state leaders gathered at the State House on Jan. 8 for the annual interfaith poverty vigil, where prayers, songs, and speeches by Gov. Dan McKee, Woonsocket Councilor Kristina Contreras Fox, and Most Rev. Bruce A. Lewandowski + Rabbi Emily Goldberg Winer underlined the initiative to combat poverty.  The Providence Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chick-fil-A will open its new restaurant at 1225 Division St. in Warwick on Thursday, Jan. 15. Locally owned by Mike Dacey, it will create 110 jobs, offer free meals for customers in cow prints (open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday), and donate $25k to Feeding America.  The Providence Journal
  • Subway launched four Protein Pockets (Baja Chicken, Peppercorn Ranch Chicken, Italian Trio, and Turkey and Ham) at its Rhode Island locations on Jan. 8. The chain also introduced a rotating Sub-of-the-Day program and a new loyalty program for extra rewards.  The Providence Journal
  • Stop and Shop said it is seeking a tenant for a vacant location after state leaders claimed the chain kept properties unused to block competition. The company noted one closed site will soon open as Whole Foods and officials plan to reintroduce a bill addressing restrictive covenants later this year.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Bryant coach Jamion Christian apologized after his team lost 77-63 to UMass Lowell at a conference home game, noting that they lacked physical toughness in the paint. He said the team must improve before its next matchup.  The Providence Journal
  • High school basketball games on Thursday ended with close finishes: Barrington overcame La Salle 65 to 60, Cranston East beat Johnston 74 to 63, and East Greenwich edged West Warwick 60 to 51 (others also saw tight wins). Coaches were reminded to send game scores between 6 and 10 p.m.  The Providence Journal
