COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leadership Rhode Island was spotlighted by United Way and The Providence Journal today to honor its 45-year legacy of connecting local leaders and building strong community ties. The nonprofit invites volunteers and donors to join its new LRI Civic Activation Network (LRI CAN) to help counter loneliness and division.  The Providence Journal
  • On Jan. 14, dozens of community members gathered at the Warwick Public Library to learn about planned renovations at the Rocky Point entrances to the state park. Residents shared ideas for extending sidewalks, including suggestions from Jane Austin and Courtney Declercq (with her son Aiden).  Warwick Online
  • U.S. News named Warwick the best place to retire in Rhode Island, citing affordable housing, quality health care, and local amenities like parks and the Pilgrim Senior Center. The report noted that 22% of residents are over 65, and median home values and rents offer affordable options for retirees.  The Providence Journal
  • Last week, the RI Foundation awarded $636,000 in grants to more than 24 animal-welfare programs statewide, funding low-cost veterinary care, adoption support and humane education.   • Mayor Frank Picozzi, who does not ice-skate, said he plans to try bumper-car rides on the ice if the new outdoor rink project moves forward in Warwick — an effort to boost local recreation.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • URI women's basketball overcame a five-point deficit and extended its win streak to 11 with a 15-0 fourth-quarter run on Jan. 21 at South Kingstown. Coach Tammi Reiss said defensive stops and key free throws set the stage for a championship bid.  The Providence Journal
  • New England Patriots fans are gearing up to travel to Denver for the AFC Championship game, with Coventry resident Susan Pearson securing tickets and a flight through a relative in Colorado. AAA Northeast (local expert) advises locals to take a train or rental car due to Monday’s snowy forecast.  WJAR
  • Local high school basketball games from Wednesday ended with close finishes. North Kingstown edged Portsmouth 40-39 after Shea Kalin’s key free throw, and other teams, including Classical and Ponaganset, posted tight victories that energized the local hoops scene.  The Providence Journal
