  • The RISPCA will run its Love Stinks fundraiser on Valentine's Day, inviting donors to have an ex's name or disliked item placed in a cat litter box for a $10 donation (or $4 for two entries) as funds raised will help care for shelter cats.  The Providence Journal
  • Roger Williams Park Zoo will offer free admission for Patriots fans who wear team gear on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last entry at 3:30) as a pre-game warmup for the Super Bowl.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The film The Roaring Game will open in theaters on Feb. 6 at Apples Cinemas in Warwick.  The Providence Journal
  • 97-year-old Albertino Duarte has handcrafted traditional pasteis de nata at Colonial Bakery in Cumberland for 50 years, learning the recipe in Northern Portugal before passing it on to family. His work supports local tradition and preserves the authentic treat for the community.  WJAR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In January, extra-cold weather across Southern New England pushed heating oil prices up 35 cents per gallon and raised gas costs to $2.86 as heavy snowfall slowed deliveries. Local providers said rising fuel costs may lead consumers to change their spending this winter.  WJAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Providence man was shoveling snow last week in Warwick when he discovered a large black & white lizard trying to crawl out of the snow. The unusual creature is now recovering after the storm.  Cranston Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • A roundup of Tuesday’s high school basketball games showed wins for teams like Lincoln, which stayed unbeaten with a strong free throw finish in beating the Hawks, while Westerly and Portsmouth also secured key victories. Coaches were reminded to email game results (6-10 p.m.) for future updates.  The Providence Journal
