COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eligible Rhode Islanders can get free help preparing and filing federal and state taxes through United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program during tax season—residents should check eligibility and visit a local center for details.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local students were named to WPI's Dean's List after demonstrating strong academic performance during the Fall 2025 semester, with the institute making the announcement. Their recognition shows the community's commitment to education.  Warwick Online
  • Local students at Roger Williams University in Bristol were named to the fall 2025 Dean's List after completing 12+ credits per semester. The recognition highlights their academic dedication.  Warwick Online
  • Pilgrim High School held its first science fair in over 20 years on Feb. 4, where nearly 40 students presented their projects. Science teacher Mark Fontaine organized the event with support from Principal Toby Gibbons & the school community.  Warwick Online
  • After more parents and teachers attended Tuesday’s School Budget Review Commission meeting, local schools and officials are nearing a deal to shrink the deficit after the $50-million bond to complete two high schools was defeated. Negotiators aim to restructure funding to better support students.  Warwick Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife rescue groups report record calls for injured birds as cold, snowy weather hinders feeding and forces emergency care for many species. The Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island and Congress of the Birds have treated hundreds since January — officials advise Rhode Islanders to report any wildlife in distress.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council approved a plan to add bumper cars to Greenwood Credit Union City Hall Plaza after a lengthy Monday meeting; installation will begin soon at the City Hall rink.  Warwick Online
  • Gov. McKee signed a bill on Wednesday that set aside $18 million from the rainy day fund to support Centurion's purchase of Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital if investor debt payments fall short. The funds will protect safety-net care for over 300,000 local patients.  WJAR
  • Last week, Warwick Sewer Authority representatives shared flood mitigation tactics at a state commission meeting — the tactics include a 24-foot levee at the wastewater treatment plant on Arthur W. Devine Blvd to protect against Pawtuxet River flooding.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • URI women's basketball team beat VCU 85-42 yesterday, extending its 16-game winning streak and remaining unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play. Coach Tammi Reiss said the team played with strong chemistry as it moved closer to securing a top-four seed in the conference tournament.  The Providence Journal
