  • Breeze Airways launches an eight-week test flight from T.F. Green International today to Cancun, departing at 1:35 p.m. One-way fares start at $168 (with return at $183) to offer affordable winter travel for local residents.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • HBO announced that filming Season 4 of The Gilded Age will begin in March in New York and include three weeks in Rhode Island this April — several Newport mansions will appear as key settings in the period drama.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents have seen high winter utility bills because electric rates rose and usage increased due to cold weather; however, a temporary plan will give bill credits in January, February, and March, and Gov. McKee is working to roll back a renewable energy law to lower future costs.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Rhode Island expert Tom Mather explained that freezing temperatures do not kill ticks because they enter dormancy and use antifreeze-like substances to survive winter. He noted that spring moisture levels will be the key factor in controlling tick populations in our area.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island FC parted ways with team president David Peart, the club announced on Feb. 13. Interim president Sean Carey will lead the club as it begins a search for a permanent leader ahead of its season opener on Mar. 7 at Centreville Bank Stadium.  The Providence Journal
