CULTURE NEWS

  • Two dozen local performers took the stage on Saturday at the Park Theater in Cranston for 'The Search' grand finale—a local showcase that offered over $10,000 in prizes while fostering community collaboration. The event featured artists from West Warwick, Cranston and Pawtucket and set the stage for future editions.  WJAR
  • Michael P. Shawver of North Providence is up for an Oscar for film editing on Sinners during the 98th Academy Awards, which will air tonight at 7 p.m. at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood; Rhode Islanders can watch the ceremony live on WLNE-TV.  The Providence Journal
  • Viola Davis, an EGOT winner who got her start in Rhode Island, grew up in Central Falls and attended Rhode Island College before earning further acclaim on Broadway and film. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Revolution Wind project has begun powering New England’s grid from 15 miles off the Rhode Island coast—its 65 turbines will supply over half of its energy locally, a move that experts say could lower consumer rates.  WJAR

  • The Journal’s pizza contest now features eight pizzerias in round three with online voting open until Monday, March 23 at 11:59 p.m.; round two eliminated favorites like Caserta and Twin's Pizza, leaving contests among Nana's Bakery and Pizza, Bettola and others.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island FC ended its season opener with a 1-1 draw against Sporting Club Jacksonville on March 14 at Centreville Bank Stadium (a match marked by a late equalizer). The team will play its first Open Cup game on Tuesday, March 16 before returning to USL play on March 21.  The Providence Journal
  • Central rallied in the fourth quarter — scoring key points — to overcome Hendricken in overtime at the Ryan Center on Saturday, Mar. 14. Coach Mike Reed said the win advanced the team to the state final.  The Providence Journal
