Good morning, Warwick. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of April.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State legislators introduced three bills to cut plastic bottle waste—one would add a 10-cent deposit refund on beverage containers similar to Oregon’s system and another would make companies handle recycling packaging. Rep. Carol McEntee brought the combined bill in the House and Sen. Mark McKenney from Warwick plans to introduce a Senate version, with environmental groups backing the effort while industry groups oppose it.  The Providence Journal
  • Yesterday, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management stocked hundreds of freshwater locations with 60,000 trout to launch the trout fishing season, a spring tradition for thousands of anglers. Anglers aged 15 and older needed a fishing license and a trout conservation stamp, and those who caught a golden rainbow trout by May 6th were eligible for a golden trout pin.  ABC 6
  • Hummingbird Central is mapping the migration of ruby-throated hummingbirds as they near their typical late April arrival in Rhode Island; local experts urge residents to set feeders with a mix (one part sugar to four parts water) and clean them weekly with a 10% bleach solution to support the birds' journey.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, four state campgrounds are open for camping with Burlingame State Park, Charlestown Breachway, Fishermen’s Memorial State Park, and George Washington Memorial State Park offering a pre-check-in process to reduce wait times when booking through Reserve America. The Department of Environmental Management is recruiting seasonal staff while East Beach State Campground will open on May 24.  ABC 6
  • House Bill 5883 is moving through the legislature and would require towns to join a parking app to track cars parked illegally in accessible spots+ show where more accessible parking is needed. The bill also makes new signs use accessible parking instead of handicapped parking+ a change meant to bring fairness and clear guidance.  WJAR
