BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava will open a fast-casual location in Warwick later this year. An NBC 10 crew saw construction on a building on Centerville Road with a Cava sign in its windows—this will be the second location for the chain in Rhode Island.  WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Warwick School Committee approved a $198M school budget on April 17 that cuts $3M in salaries and will be reviewed by the Budget Commission on April 21 — some members said details on the cuts were missing, and more revisions are expected.  Warwick Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee proposed a budget amendment on April 18 that will require hospitals, nursing facilities and large physician practices to submit quarterly financial reports to the state—an effort to provide early warning of financial risks before further care disruptions occur following Anchor Medical Associates' announced closure in June.  The Providence Journal
  • The Rhode Island ACLU and law firm Shaheen and Gordon filed a federal class action lawsuit representing over 100 students from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico whose F1 student visas were abruptly terminated, risking detention and deportation. The lawsuit claims that these terminations disrupted studies at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and violated due process.  ABC 6
  • Mayor Picozzi named Ernest Almonte, David Champagne, and Angela P. Murray as his three appointees to join the Warwick Schools Budget Commission—details released in City Council documents—and the Council will vote on their confirmation on April 21.  Warwick Post
  • Senate President Dominick Ruggerio (76) was admitted to Our Lady of Fatima Hospital after a reaction to cancer treatment and doctors are working to help him regain his strength. He attended only five of 18 Senate sessions this year following his January re-election.  The Providence Journal

  • Bishop Hendricken beat East Providence 8-5 in a hard-fought baseball game at Pepin Field—Greg Fleury pitched well and timely hits from Cullen Crain, Parker Boyd, and Jack DePalma helped the Hawks improve to a record of 6-0-1.  The Providence Journal
