  • State and city leaders gathered Wednesday at City Hall to mark National Donate Life Month, where New England Donor Services hosted donor families & officials to highlight how organ and tissue donations can change lives; Mayor Frank Picozzi issued a proclamation at the event.  WJAR
  • Greenwood Community Church in Warwick hosts a May Breakfast on Saturday, April 25 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. (the meal costs $14 for adults and $8 for kids) as part of a long-standing spring tradition that raises funds for local organizations.  The Providence Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A JetBlue flight en route to T.F. Green was diverted to Boston on Wed, April 22 as the pilot avoided landing on a shorter runway in wet conditions amid renovation of the airport’s primary 8,700-ft runway.  WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roger Williams University announced Tuesday, April 21 that President Ioannis Miaoulis will retire on May 31 after seven years; the Board of Trustees named Chief of Staff Brian Williams as interim president starting June 1 (Miaoulis cited personal well-being as his reason).  The Providence Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island conservation groups celebrated Earth Week by spotlighting threatened species (the American burying beetle, piping plover, Eastern spadefoot toad, and diamondback terrapin) and noting ongoing efforts across local sites like Block Island and Narragansett to safeguard critical habitats. Programs will expand these efforts to boost species recovery.  The Providence Journal
  • A local plant uses a high-heat process (biochar) to turn woodchips into a carbon-rich soil amendment for gardens, and QSS plans to apply the same technology to process sewage sludge in the near future.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kent Hospital is renovating its Warwick campus with a new 90,000+ sq ft ambulatory facility, expanded emergency and cardiac services, and 18 new clinician hires, with construction underway and set to finish by March; the project uses a $215.5 million Greystone loan under FHA 242 to meet increased patient demand.  The Providence Journal
