COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Memorial Day weekend, Roger Williams Park Zoo will open a new penguin exhibit featuring a dozen Humboldt penguins from Chile and Peru to support the Species Survival Plan for the vulnerable species — the zoo last had penguins in 2013.  WJAR
  • May Breakfasts, a Rhode Island tradition since 1868, will include an event at Greenwood Community Church in Warwick on Saturday, April 26 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. where residents will enjoy a homemade meal for $12 for adults and $7 for children featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs, and local treats—raising funds for nearby community groups.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Jorge Big Head Pimental, a Cranston man, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and five years of supervised release for running a major fentanyl trafficking operation—law enforcement said his lab yielded 19,315 fake pills and equipment that could produce up to 633,000 pills.  ABC 6

  • During National Small Business Week, Skills for Rhode Island’s Future and local government partners honor small business owners by recognizing SBA winners and planning the 2025 Small Business Summit to help local firms grow—support like better technology and funding will help them thrive.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roger Williams University’s Extension School (1 Empire St.) is launching the first residential doula certification program in state to train doulas in perinatal care; the course costs $1,500, applications are due May 30, and classes will run on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. between June 7 and June 28, with studies showing doulas may reduce labor times, lower cesarean rates, and improve breastfeeding success.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warwick officials announced on Monday at the Fire Department headquarters that a $1M federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant paid for 72 new self-contained air packs for over 200 firefighters — replacing older equipment without using local tax dollars. Mayor Frank Picozzzi and Fire Chief Peter McMichael thanked federal officials for the funding — which helps keep local firefighters safer.  Warwick Online
  • NOAA is facing budget, staff and research cuts that may hurt Rhode Island's billion-dollar fishing and seafood industry — reducing vital services like weather forecasts and fish stock assessments. NOAA Fisheries reported bluefin tuna catches in 2024 were 9% above quota — and officials will discuss quota adjustments at a meeting from May 6 to 8.  Johnston SunRise

  • Providence Journal announced the 2025 All-State Girls Hockey Team featuring top players like La Salle's Eliza Barker and South County Storm's Samantha Haun — the selections were made with in-person evaluations, postseason performance and key statistics from Rhode Island high school competitions.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island softball season is heating up as local teams like Pilgrim, Toll Gate, Cranston East, West and Johnston post strong records in Division I and II.
