- ➤ Warwick was named one of the top 100 best places to live in the U.S. by Livability with a score of 761, making it the highest scoring city in New England. Livability rated the town using 100 metrics like economy, housing, amenities, transportation, environment, safety, and education — results that show Warwick’s coastal charm and quality services. - ➤ Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio died on April 21 after battling cancer, ending more than 40 years of service and leaving a leadership gap at the State House — Rhode Island leaders also face a health care crisis while Garden City Center prepares to add a new restaurant, four stores and a farmers market in the coming months. - ➤ Former Congressman Jim Langevin left Congress in 2023 after 30 years of service and now leads Rhode Island College’s new Institute for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies, which received $2 million in state funding. - ➤ The Warwick Zoning Board of Review will meet on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Annex Building (65 Centerville Road) to discuss petitions requesting variances and special use permits for several properties in different wards. The board may approve, approve with conditions, or deny each petition and will also review the minutes from the April 8 meeting. Warwick Online
- ➤ Rhode Island joined 18 other states in filing a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts on Friday against the U.S. Department of Education after the department threatened to cut more than $116 million in federal funding if agencies do not end diversity, equity & inclusion efforts. Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said the action seeks to safeguard vital education services for students from low income families, those with special needs and vulnerable children.
