COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ After more than 25 years, the only local water park closed ahead of the 2026 season (the park will still offer winter skiing and snow tubing) due to long-term concerns. Visitors can head to Lake Compounce, opening May 9, or Water Wizz, opening June 13 for summer water fun. The Providence Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Ted Turner, a famous skipper and CNN founder, often visited the area and took American Eagle for a practice sail before a 2012 championship race in Newport (with tactician Gary Jobson) and later attended his son's RISD graduation. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey entertained students at Robertson Elementary School in Warwick on Wednesday with acrobatic feats including the German Wheel, and they will next visit Garvin Memorial Elementary School in Cumberland & Hasbro Children’s Hospital. WJAR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ College move-out season is underway as Rhode Island schools schedule dorm closures throughout May. Students should review deadlines at Brown University (May 16 for undergraduates and May 24 for graduates) and Providence College (May 8 for non-graduates and May 18 for graduates) to plan their move-out. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced that state beaches will open on Saturday, May 23 with amenities, lifeguards, and restrooms while improvement projects at Misquamicut and Roger Wheeler near completion—online parking pass purchases and summer job applications are now available. - ➤ Groundwork RI is featured for providing job training and environmental improvements by planting trees, installing rain gardens and preparing a compost hub in Providence, which will open this fall. The nonprofit helps local residents overcome employment barriers while building greener neighborhoods. The Providence Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Utz recalled six varieties of Zapp's and three Dirty potato chips in Rhode Island on May 4 because the seasoning may contain salmonella. No illnesses have been reported and customers should not eat the affected products, and they can call Utz Customer Care at 1-877-423-0149 for refunds and questions. The Providence Journal
- ➤ All CVS stores in Rhode Island accepted WIC for infant formula products on May 1, helping families use their WIC benefits easily. The chain said it is working with other states to expand WIC acceptance as part of its commitment to community health. The Providence Journal
