Good morning, Warwick. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • Victor Colebut, a Pawtucket man with a history of domestic violence, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend Kristine Ohler in 2020 after a five-day trial found him guilty of domestic murder, assault, and breaking a no-contact order—his conviction reflects a firm stance on domestic violence.  The Providence Journal
  • Warwick police arrived at a Washington Street residence on Thursday morning after a man missed his court appearance — officers heard two gunshots and a drone search found the man deceased with no other injuries.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island Catholics reacted to Robert Prevost’s election as Pope Leo XIV on May 8, making him the first American pope. Local church leaders and community members welcomed his election — while some noted his international experience — and urged prayers for his new role.  The Providence Journal
  • Bravo TV announced a new series called The Real Housewives of Rhode Island that will soon spotlight local families and vibrant community ties — strong social media buzz and support from local officials pushed producers to choose our state for filming.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warwick Councilman Bill Muto, who recently recovered from food poisoning, said he is a maybe vote on the June 2 food truck bid because he wants a more competitive process for local vendors. He noted that the current setup drew only Ocean State Concessions and could cut city revenue, though the city will honor its current decision.  Warwick Post
  • U.S. District Judge Melissa DuBose on May 7 ordered that immigration officials give 72 hours’ notice before deporting G.M.G., a Rhode Island barber detained on March 26 under allegations of gang ties despite his pending asylum application and claims of political targeting. The ACLU argues that the notice period is needed to prevent grave risk if he is transferred to El Salvador—authorities insist there will be no surprise removal—while he awaits a court hearing.  The Providence Journal
  • The Warwick Schools Budget Commission ended its purchasing review Wednesday, just before Mayor Frank Picozzi sent his proposed $380M FY26 budget with $194M for schools to the City Council, noting a cumulative $1.7M deficit for FY24—FY25 and that payroll, making up 80% of spending, will be its next review focus. City Council budget hearings will begin May 19 and a resolution passed unanimously to enable flexible tax classifications amid a revaluation that will lower residential rates from $14.47 to $13.34 and slightly raise commercial rates from $25.32 to $25.45.  Warwick Post
