- ➤ Rhode Island lawmakers proposed a bill that would redirect 50% of cannabis excise tax revenue to fund health—housing and education improvements in communities affected by the War on Drugs. Lawmakers and advocates said the equity fund could reach $135 million by 2034, while critics questioned whether the Cannabis Control Commission is the right agency to manage such a program. - ➤ Protesters gathered outside an Advance America storefront in Warwick on May 9 to protest payday lenders charging up to 260% interest on short-term loans and urged lawmakers to close a loophole that lets companies target cash-strapped residents (loans are capped at $500).
