- ➤ Rhode Island lawmakers proposed a bill that would redirect 50% of cannabis excise tax revenue to fund health—housing and education improvements in communities affected by the War on Drugs. Lawmakers and advocates said the equity fund could reach $135 million by 2034, while critics questioned whether the Cannabis Control Commission is the right agency to manage such a program. - ➤ Protesters gathered outside an Advance America storefront in Warwick on May 9 to protest payday lenders charging up to 260% interest on short-term loans and urged lawmakers to close a loophole that lets companies target cash-strapped residents (loans are capped at $500). - ➤ The Tax Collector of Warwick announced that the city will auction estates with unpaid taxes at Warwick City Hall on May 30 at 10:00 a.m.—bidders must pay with cash or a certified check, and property owners will have one year to redeem their estates by paying the taxes, assessments, a 10% penalty and 1% interest per month starting from the seventh month.
