GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council warns that the Housing Resources Commission has conflicts of interest—its board is missing members and includes leaders from funded nonprofits who help decide awards. RIPEC urges lawmakers to reform the commission by shifting authority to the Department of Housing and clarifying its role.  The Providence Journal
  • Social Security payments in Rhode Island are set for May with retirement benefits on May 2, May 14, May 21, and May 28, and SSI recipients will get two checks—one on May 1 and one on May 30 so they do not receive a June check. Recipients are advised to wait three extra mailing days if their payment does not arrive on time.  The Providence Journal

  • Rhode Island Football Club kicked off its veterans initiative on Tuesday by visiting local veterans at a VA Providence facility—where officials and mascot Chip handed out high-fives and 400 tickets ahead of a Memorial Day game. The event aimed to honor the service of local veterans.  WJAR
