ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Rhode Islanders earned an average of $36.01 per hour in April, which brought in about $1,199.13 weekly and over $70,000 yearly, based on non-seasonally adjusted data. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Warwick City Council approved Mayor Frank Picozzi’s $380M FY26 budget on Thursday after making amendments that shifted funds without changing extra school funds or tax rates. • Members of Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects and several unions gathered at the State Capitol on May 20 to support a casino smoking ban bill that would remove the smoking exemption for casinos and pari-mutuel facilities. The bill—spearheaded by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi with support from House Speaker Joe Shekarchi and House Minority Leader Mike Chippendale—was held for further study on April 10.  Warwick Post
  • RI State Crime Lab assessors found 15 nonconformities (about 9% of 172 standards) in a March review and gave the lab until May 30 to fix issues including problems in firearms and fire debris analysis. Director Dennis Hilliard said the lab is working with assessors to meet all national standards before re-accreditation.  The Providence Journal
  • The McKee administration opposes a bill that would ease public access to records by lowering fees and requiring timely release of police bodycam footage and arrest reports. Advocates say the changes would boost transparency, while state agencies warn the bill risks privacy and could hinder criminal investigations—adding concerns about taxpayer burdens.  The Providence Journal
