Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 25th of May.
Good morning, Warwick.
🏈 Sports
College sports got busy this week as teams prepare for summer practices while Andrew Smith won the state tennis match today with a 6-2, 6-1 win and La Salle Academy beat Bishop Hendricken 11-7 in a baseball game on May 16.
The Celtics face trouble amid new ownership and salary challenges—star Jayson Tatum hurt his right Achilles tendon in a series with the Knicks.
Saturday’s RIIL spring sports playoffs saw La Salle’s tennis team win 4 to 1 over South Kingstown after a delayed match and injury changes, and teams in baseball and softball secured wins that set them up for Tuesday travel rounds—highlighting a busy day of postseason action.
The updated RIIL baseball playoffs schedule runs from May 24 through June 11 — featuring elimination rounds on May 24 and May 25, pod plays beginning May 27, and championship series at RIC — and the website will be updated regularly with scores, brackets and photo galleries as the playoffs progress.
High school boys volleyball playoffs will start Tuesday, May 27 and run through June 7 at venues including Rhode Island College, with top seeds North Kingstown in Division I, Lincoln in Division II, and Mt. Hope in Division III.
The schedule is tentative due to possible shifts in graduation dates — Division I matches begin with a 5:30 p.m. qualifier and culminate in a championship tripleheader set for 2 p.m. — so game times may change as teams advance.
