  • At Saturday's Gaspee Days arts and crafts festival, Barry Edelstein of Cranston said the possum is his top-selling metal animal from his collection + he expects local collectors to appreciate its unique design.  Cranston Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Joann’s only store in Rhode Island at 1500 Bald Hill Road in Warwick will close this week as it offers clearance sales on craft supplies, fabric and home decor marked down by between 70 and 90 percent—giving local shoppers a final chance to buy before it permanently closes. The store, which opened in 1943, has served the community for decades.  The Providence Journal
  • On The Border’s Bald Hill Road location in Warwick is permanently closed—as stated on its website—after the chain filed for Chapter 11 in March citing financial struggles. The nearest outlet now is in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.  WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Crafted Hope Brewing in East Greenwich hosts a silent movie event showing A Burlesque on Carmen with live music by Anton Miller and Rita Porfiris — the 44-minute film is shown at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. as part of the Music on the Hill festival featuring classical concerts in Warwick and Cranston.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cranston West baseball team beat the Eagles 7-1 in Barrington over the weekend to earn a spot in the Division I qualifying round—pitcher Alex Milano threw a complete game with nine strikeouts while the team stole five bases to build an early lead. The win capped a strong late-season surge that set them up for the postseason.  Cranston Herald
