Good morning, Warwick. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 29th of May.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island movie producer Chad A. Verdi Sr. announced a five-year deal with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio to produce over 20 films. The first film is the action thriller 'Carthage Must Be Destroyed' — directed by Ted Griffin with filming set to begin in October as casting continues.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha introduced measures to tackle a primary care crisis by proposing to raise Medicaid reimbursement to 100 percent of Medicare and to cut nearly all prior authorization rules. He noted that 51 percent of the state’s 606 primary care offices were not taking new patients—steps meant to keep hospitals open and control drug prices.  ABC 6
  • The Coast Guard will auction the historic Warwick Light property — a 1.3-acre site with a lighthouse built in 1827 and a residence from 1932 — despite local efforts to secure city ownership for public access. Mayor Frank Picozzi and the Warwick Neck Improvement Association are disappointed by the move, while some council members argue that city control would have been too costly.  Warwick Online
  • The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced it will distribute about 5,000 food benefit cards to seniors through its Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. The cards are pre-loaded with $50 and may be applied for at senior centers or on RIDEM’s website, and can be used to buy Rhode Island grown fruits, vegetables + local honey from June 1 until November 30.  ABC 6
  • On Wednesday morning in Cranston, the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation joined local librarians at the Cranston Public Library — Senators Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Congressmen Gabe Amo and Seth Magaziner with library officials urged protection of over $1 million in IMLS funds — as federal cuts had threatened the library support. This rally marked a local stand against an executive order that aimed to close the agency distributing these funds.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Albertson’s Companies has voluntarily recalled three store-made Greek salads (supplied by Fresh Creative Foods) because a recalled cucumber ingredient may have caused salmonella and the salads were sold at Shaw’s in Rhode Island. Customers with the recalled salads are advised to throw them out or return them (for a full refund).  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes will compete in sports such as bowling, powerlifting, soccer skills, track and field, and swimming at two venues in Kingston and Middletown from May 30 through June 1. The opening ceremony starts Friday at Meade Stadium — where law enforcement officers will carry the Flame of Hope — marking the start of the state’s largest sporting event of the year.  Warwick Online
