  • Jack Burnett, a widowed Norwood Avenue resident, now runs a lawn sale from his front yard where he fixes discarded items for neighbors. After his wife’s passing, he turned to repairing things to help cover expenses and build community ties (with word-of-mouth boosting his business).  WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • NBC 10 News won three Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards when the RTDNA announced the wins on Thursday, May 28. The awards honor its Gabriel House Fire coverage, digital reporting on the Karen Read trial + a Blizzard of '26 special, qualifying NBC for national honors in August.  WJAR
  • Rhode Island’s official tartan honors Scottish heritage and state pride as local Joyce Dell’s design was crafted in Scotland & certified by the Scottish Tartans Authority. Adopted in 2000, the tartan uses colors that represent the ocean, forests, and core state values, connecting nearly 20,000 residents with a Scottish legacy.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee issued a statewide drought advisory on Thursday, May 28 after months of dry conditions, urging residents and businesses to conserve water by hand watering gardens, fixing leaks, and using washing machines efficiently.  WJAR
  • Social Security benefits for June follow a normal schedule with SSI checks arriving on Monday, June 1 & retirement payments on June 10, June 17, and June 24. Over 241,000 Rhode Islanders are set to receive a 2.8% COLA from January in their monthly benefits.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wizards beat North Providence 6-4 at McCarthy Field on May 29 with a gritty team effort; they now await the winner (Pod 2 Championship) on May 31.  The Providence Journal
  • Photos capturing playoff baseball from West Warwick and North Providence were taken at McCarthy Field on May 28 to show in-game action.  The Providence Journal
  • Thursday, May 28 saw multiple RIIL playoff games unfold as top-seeded Hendricken edged South Kingstown 5-4 with a strong performance from Jayden Burgos, and several teams prepared for elimination matchups on Friday at local fields.  The Providence Journal
