COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Warwick resident Peter Ricci, a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific and worked as a mine sweeper during the Okinawa invasion, celebrated his 105th birthday today—State Representative Earl Read presented him with a citation recognizing his service.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Social Security benefits for June will be sent out on June 11 for those born between the 1st and 10th, on June 18 for those born between the 11th and 20th, and on June 25 for those born between the 21st and 31st—SSI checks were sent last month and over 200000 Rhode Islanders rely on these payments, so the agency advises waiting three extra mailing days if a check does not arrive on time.  The Providence Journal
  • Tomorrow, Mayor Frank Picozzi and Warwick Police will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Greenwich and Main to introduce the red light cameras program that installs 15 cameras at busy intersections and 22 near schools with a 30-day warning period—school zone speed cameras will launch at 11 locations later this summer as part of a larger safety effort.  Warwick Post
  • Congressman Seth Magaziner will reintroduce his Prevent Illegal Gun Sales Act in Warwick with Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez and local gun safety advocates joining him at a press conference— the bill will require more frequent inspections of firearms dealers and tougher penalties for missing federally required background checks.  ABC 6
  • Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said the Supreme Court declined to review the ban on high-capacity gun magazines so the law stays in effect—upholding similar safety measures in Maryland. Rhode Island’s law, passed in 2022 after mass shootings, led to over 300 charges in 2024—helping deter gun violence.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Union healthcare workers held an informational picket outside Rhode Island Hospital Monday as they continued contract bargaining— they demanded safer working conditions and a more affordable health insurance plan while hospital operations remained unchanged.  WJAR
  • Butler Hospital ended health insurance for striking workers on June 1, and the union said the workers have signed up for state healthcare benefits. Governor McKee wrote a letter urging both sides to return to negotiations for a fair deal.  ABC 6
