EDUCATION NEWS

  • After Warwick voters approved a $350-million bond on Nov. 5, 2022 for new high schools to replace outdated facilities, groundbreaking ceremonies will take place next week—Monday, June 9 at Toll Gate at 1 p.m.—with another scheduled—Tuesday, June 10 at Pilgrim at noon—and the schools will open in 2027. Demolition at Toll Gate will begin this week to clear space for new athletic facilities while Pilgrim awaits environmental permit clearance before site work starts.  Warwick Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warwick officials announced that red light cameras will be installed at five intersections and drivers will receive warning tickets during a 30-day grace period, with $85 citations beginning July 4—when the program becomes active. The city will also install school zone speed cameras by August 2 to improve safety near schools.  ABC 6
  • The Coast Guard is proposing to remove 32 buoys in Narragansett Bay, which has alarmed local mariners and officials who rely on them for safe navigation, including Warwick Harbor responsibilities. Mariners must send feedback by email before June 13 to help decide if buoys like the crucial R8—vital for guiding boats—should remain as part of the navigation system.  Warwick Online
  • Rhode Island Senate passed a bill that caps prescription inhalers at $25 a month to help people with asthma—the bill now moves to the House for review. A CDC study showed Rhode Island has high rates of asthma among adults.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Golf State Championships held last week at Cranston Country Club, La Salle Academy won the team title with 613 while Pilgrim made its third straight top-10 finish by placing eighth with 642 and Bishop Hendricken tied for fifth with 630. Thomas Hanson finished sixth for Hendricken—Brody Corcoran finished 13th for Pilgrim.  Warwick Online
