CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Film director Kevin Smith is returning to Rhode Island Comic Con to mark the 30th anniversary of Mallrats and will headline a special panel with cast members like Jason Mewes and Joey Lauren Adams—ticket packages offer autographs, photos and special prints. Rhode Island Comic Con will run Nov. 7-9 in Providence at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Amica Mutual Pavilion. WJAR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Warwick Public Schools launched a school bus safety program—partnering with Warwick Police Department and BusPatrol—to combat reckless driving near stopped buses. The program will outfit buses with cameras to capture license plates and issue warnings during a grace period before enforcement starts on June 26. WJAR
- ➤ Graduation ceremonies will take place next week as Warwick high schools honor their students, with Bishop Hendricken High holding its event on June 10 at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and Rocky Hill Country Day, Pilgrim, and Toll Gate High scheduling their events on June 11 (starting at 10 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m. respectively) while key speakers, including class valedictorians and other notable figures (such as alumni and school officials), will deliver addresses. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Rhode Island House will vote on an assault weapons ban bill that passed its committee; if passed, the bill will make assault-style firearms illegal to sell, make or possess and will take effect on July 1st, 2026—owners who legally acquired these guns before that date can keep them. WJAR
- ➤ Mayor Frank Picozzi — with Warwick Police — launched a red light camera system at the corner of Greenwich Avenue and Main Avenue on Wednesday to address voter complaints over dangerous driving. The program includes 50 cameras at 15 intersections, and 24 speed cameras will be activated at schools on August 28 during school hours. Warwick Post
- ➤ The U.S. Justice Department sent a letter to Attorney General Peter Neronha saying the state is under investigation for alleged race-based discrimination in its affirmative action program that may violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for 1 lb packages of Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef sold at Whole Foods—these products, made on May 22 and May 23 with expiration dates of June 19 and June 20, tested positive for E. coli even though no illnesses have been reported. Consumers are advised to discard or return the product to avoid any risk of infection. The Providence Journal
