CRIME NEWS

  • A 45-year-old RIDOT engineer tech II from Johnston was arrested Tuesday for allegedly using a prisoner's identity to secure a $51,000 car loan to buy a Mercedes-Benz and commit further fraud — video surveillance showed he drove a RIDOT-marked vehicle to a Coventry credit union and was released on personal recognance after arraignment in Warwick District Court — as state police continue their investigation.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee announced on Friday at 10:00 a.m. which company would rebuild the westbound side of Washington Bridge after it closed on December 11 for safety concerns — the decision came after Walsh Construction Company and American Bridge submitted detailed proposals. Officials said no reopening date or cost has been set yet — further plans will be shared as the project moves forward.  WJAR
  • Gov. Dan McKee announced on June 6 that a new Interstate 195 westbound Washington Bridge will cost $427 million and be ready for drivers in late 2028 — a significant change from earlier estimates.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bishop Hendricken beat Cumberland 4-3 in the first game of the Division I baseball state championship series on Thursday. Frank Tillinghast drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth and Cooper Maher pitched 4 2/3 innings, and Game 2 is set for Sunday at 4 p.m.  The Providence Journal
  • On June 5, West Warwick defeated Portsmouth 9-5 in the Division II losers’ bracket final at Rhode Island College—rallying with a four-run sixth inning to secure a championship game spot. They will face St. Raphael on Sunday as Portsmouth saw their season end for the second consecutive year.  The Providence Journal
