- ➤ Vertex Pharmaceuticals will lay off 125 employees in Providence and consolidate its three Providence buildings into one campus at 225 Carolina Ave following the cancellation of its VX-264 diabetes program. The layoffs will take effect on Aug. 5 — the company is offering severance, outplacement support, and career counseling. The Providence Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Officials broke ground on Tuesday at noon on the athletic fields of Pilgrim High School to start building a new high school — voters approved $350 million in bonds in 2022. The new school is set to be finished for the start of the 2027-2028 school year. ABC 6
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ethics Commission ruled Tuesday, June 10 that Senate President Valarie Lawson’s leadership of NEARI does not conflict with her Senate role. She recused herself from two labor-related votes last week to avoid any appearance of bias in labor matters. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Rhode Island lawmakers in the State House will consider a bill called 'Take it outside' that would let restaurants serve food outdoors for up to 18 months if severe damage forces them to close. The bill comes after Matunuck Oyster Bar shut down following a fire — it is expected to restore 50 jobs if passed. WJAR

- ➤ Rhode Island offers many Father's Day activities with events ranging from a sailing trip in Newport on June 15 to a camping cookout in West Greenwich on June 14. The day also has options for a concert in Bristol, a tandem bike brunch in Portsmouth, a golf barbecue in Warwick, free zoo admission in Providence, and more—tickets and prices vary. - ➤ The Bishop Hendricken baseball team became Rhode Island’s Division I state champion after sweeping the Cumberland Clippers in a title series last week.
