- ➤ Becky Bernard, a Pilgrim High School graduate, won a gold medal in the 25 meter walk & a bronze in the softball throw at the Special Olympics 2025 Summer Games at URI. She now serves on the Athlete Leadership Council for ReFocus and works with coaches to make sports more inclusive for everyone. Warwick Online
- ➤ On Tuesday, June 10, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Laurie O’Rourke received the first Benjamin Lindsay Award for her support of Gaspee Days and Pawtuxet community events. The award honors Henry Benjamin Lindsay’s historic role during the burning of the HMS Gaspee and celebrates her community contributions through her work at O’Rourke’s Bar & Grill & related events. - ➤ Warwick firefighters and animal control removed a fallen grate from a storm drain on Wednesday to rescue ducklings that had fallen with their mother and safely reunite the family. ABC 6
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Dan McKee and Secretary of Commerce Liz Tanner awarded a $4 million grant to Blue Robotics Lab in Bristol on Wednesday through the University of Rhode Island’s Innovation Campus program— the non-profit tests undersea robots for market use and is expected to create 400 jobs. The lab will also offer high school internships— part of the Blue Youth program. ABC 6

- ➤ A jury awarded more than $1 million to former Bishop Hendricken administrators, the school, and the Diocese of Providence after longtime theology teacher David Marsocci was found to have defamed them by alleging a cover up of misconduct—lawyers estimated the total judgment will be over $2 million with interest added. The trial lasted 11 days and the verdict supported the school's claim that the allegations were baseless. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Early this week, city and state officials broke ground on two new Warwick high schools at Toll Gate and Pilgrim after 33,000 voters approved a $350 million bond. Dimeo Construction began demolition of the former Drum Rock Elementary and site clearing will take 6 to 8 weeks — bids came in $8 million below the projection — officials said. Warwick Online
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island officials reported that overdose deaths declined with 329 accidental overdose deaths in 2024—a drop of 18% from 2023 that marks a two-year decrease. Gov. McKee said state leaders are working to reach a 30% reduction target by 2030 and to boost access to lifesaving care. WJAR

- ➤ The Rhode Island Interscholastic League Outdoor Track and Field State Championships were held last weekend at Brown University where La Salle Academy took first with 147 points, Bishop Hendricken finished second with 113, and Barrington came in third with 111. Cumberland won the girls' title with 69 points and West Warwick was second with 64 while athletes like Keaney Bayha and Carson Dean had standout performances. Warwick Online
