COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Rhode Island launched a new mentoring program on Monday that offers boys aged eight to 12 on the waitlist a chance to build connections with adult role models through team-building activities (the group will meet twice a month to develop social skills and explore their strengths).  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Joshua Pavao—a 45-year-old Florida man who lives part time in Coventry—was sentenced to 30 months in prison for firearm charges tied to a high-speed chase in East Providence that ended in multiple crashes and a foot escape before his arrest.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island House approved a bill to repeal the payday lending law—this bill allows lenders to charge 260% annualized interest and has been debated since 2006—and the Senate committee will vote on it today; if passed, the repeal will take effect on January 1, 2027.  The Providence Journal
  • The House budget being voted on today gives RIPTA an extra $15M but leaves an $18M gap for next year's transit system. A consultant report warns the agency will cut 20% of bus trips—leading to 90 layoffs—if additional revenue is not found.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The RI Hockey Hall of Fame selected Edwin “Yogi” Gardiner of Warwick, an 81-year-old coach with a 50-year record of mentoring youth in hockey, as the 2025 Malcolm Greene Chace Memorial Trophy recipient. He will receive his award on August 23 at the annual Enshrinement Celebration and Dinner at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet.  ABC 6
  • Case junior outfielder Meghan Pereira made a diving catch during Saturday’s MIAA D4 softball championship, helping the Cardinals win 7-6 & secure a third straight Division 4 state title as her play was named ABC6 Sports Play of the Week.  ABC 6
