EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Edgewood Sailing School begins its annual summer program this week for kids (ages 7-17) to learn sailing on Narragansett Bay. The camp at Edgewood Yacht Club on 3 Shaw Ave. in Cranston offers half-day and full-day sessions until the second week of August. Cranston Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former state trooper and state senator Cynthia Coyne of Barrington announced she is challenging Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos in the 2026 primary—citing her work on reproductive rights, human trafficking, and banning ghost guns. Running independently from a gubernatorial ticket, Coyne promises to bring transparency and choice—addressing issues like rising living costs and aging infrastructure in Rhode Island. - ➤ Last month in Washington, DC, a group of charter captains and anglers met with congressional staff to ask for full funding for NOAA, saying that the proposed deep cuts would hurt local fishing research & coastal programs. They warned that reduced budgets will damage Rhode Island’s fishing industry and programs like our National Sea Grant and Narragansett Bay research reserve. Warwick Online
- ➤ Last month, local fishing advocates met in Washington, DC to urge Congress to keep full funding for NOAA because planned cuts would harm local marine research and recreational fishing programs. They warned that a reduction in budget and staff could weaken the data collection needed to manage our fisheries. Cranston Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Health recommends closing the swimming area at Oakland Beach in Warwick because high bacteria counts were found in the water. The department will continue monitoring water quality through Labor Day (water tests are in progress) and update the public (public updates will follow) if conditions change. ABC 6
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The New England Free Jacks will face the Houston SaberCats in the MLR Championship at Centreville Bank Stadium on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. — the team is aiming for its third consecutive title — as team officials spoke virtually on Tuesday. ABC 6
