CRIME NEWS

  • Cranston police on July 9 set a perimeter around a home on Warwick Avenue where an armed robbery suspect was holed up — they evacuated nearby homes and urged the public to avoid the area.  WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clearing for future parking at the new Toll Gate high school continued this week with tree removal, land leveling, and demolition of the former Drum Rock School—this work is managed by Dimeo Construction. The plan calls for building the new school on the current athletic fields, and once it opens, the old building will be demolished for additional fields while construction at Pilgrim awaits permit approval from the Department of Environmental Management.  Warwick Online
  • Students from Cranston and Warwick flew to Atlanta last month to compete at SkillsUSA’s National Leadership & Skills Conference at the Georgia World Congress Center and won eight awards from 114 competitions amid 6,500 nationwide participants. Warwick students, including Cali Hidalgo-Stafford who took fourth in Pin Design along with Connor Jackson, Jaden Brown, and Noah Durand, earned awards—following state-level gold medals that advanced them to this national event.  Warwick Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mount Hope Bridge will be closed for four days beginning Aug. 14 while workers resurface the pavement; officials have coordinated with Bristol and Portsmouth to establish detours (the work may be moved to September if severe weather occurs).  ABC 6
  • Former Rhode Island Governor Ed DiPrete died Tuesday during a family gathering celebrating his 91st birthday, NBC 10's Gene Valicenti said; he served as the state's 70th governor from 1985 to 1991.  WJAR
  • Former Gov. Edward DiPrete died at 91 on his birthday — Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore confirmed his passing. He served as governor from 1985 to 1991 and was known for his long public service in Cranston.  ABC 6
  • Rep. Julie A. Casimiro said the legislative session focused on tackling a tight budget by raising support for health care, housing, and children in state care—measures included funding mobile youth crisis teams and banning school cellphones. She will push additional bills next year to protect child benefits and extend legal recourse for abuse victims.  Warwick Online
  • Elected officials and police officers gathered on Wednesday at Warwick Police Headquarters to honor Captain Charles Boisseau—who saw a trash can fire in Cranston on Saturday night and alerted a sleeping family, helping to save a woman and three children.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Warwick Continental American Little League 11U All-Star team beat East Greenwich to win the District 3 championship on Monday and will face the District I winner on Saturday night at Klitzer Field—after also winning the 10U title last year.  Warwick Online
