COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saturday morning, veterans attended the first informational breakfast at Pilgrim Senior Center hosted by Boots to Briefcases to learn about job opportunities, benefits, and other services. Former state Rep Camille Vella-Wilkinson and officials Mayor Frank Picozzi and U.S. Rep Seth Magaziner joined groups including the Ocean State Center for Independent Living, Operation Stand Down, Westbay Community Action, and Italian American War Veterans — which provided guidance and announced plans for a parade on Tuesday, Nov. 11.  Warwick Online
  • Henry Polichetti turned 110 on July 3 and has seen nearly a century of history—witnessing events from world wars to major technological changes. The Cranston veteran is honored as a living link to the past that enriches our community.  Warwick Online

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport was named Top Domestic Airport in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2025 readers’ survey and will be featured in the August issue— the award recognizes its strong performance among 560 U.S. commercial airports and highlights its status as the fastest growing airport.  Warwick Online
  • Chef’s Oakland Beach Diner marked its one-year anniversary on July 1 with a ceremonial cake cutting attended by city officials and chamber representatives — owner Marc Needham said the diner started with four employees and now employs 11 while serving popular dishes like his grandmother’s meatloaf. The restaurant also features a pet-friendly patio and live weekend music that continue to draw local residents.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Warwick Public Schools said goodbye this spring to 19 retiring teachers who each served 25 or more years. The veterans shared how the pandemic and new technology changed classrooms — many noted both challenges in online lessons and benefits from fast digital access.  Warwick Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Corrections will digitize inmate mail by sending non-legal letters to a Tampa processing center to prevent K2 smuggling—officials report a rise in drug cases and a January fire that sent four correctional officers to the hospital. The new system will be completed by the end of the year as part of efforts to control contraband entering facilities.  WJAR
  • Construction work is underway at Warwick schools—Drum Rock School will begin demolition on Aug. 2 and Pilgrim High School remediation is set to start mid-August, while Holliman Elementary finishes updates ahead of its July 23 move-in. The School Committee approved the Toll Gate 60% construction document and expects to review final cost figures in upcoming meetings.  Warwick Online
