COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A rare gold lobster from Dave's Marketplace in Warwick found a permanent home at Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown last week. The aquarium will use the lobster for public education — it will host a virtual naming contest on Facebook later this week.  WJAR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • 36-year-old Brittany Charette from Warwick was riding her motorcycle on Interstate 44 in Pomfret when she collided with a Honda CRV — she was taken to a local hospital before being flown to UMass Medical for serious treatment — and officials said the other driver was not hurt while they investigated the crash.  WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • During St. Mary’s Feast on Sunday, parishioners gathered at St. Mary’s Church in Knightsville as the cherished statue of Mary was carried slowly down Cranston Street—its weight a sign of long-held traditions. Mayor Ken Hopkins and the Feast Society led the procession that honored the community’s heritage and faith.  Cranston Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community College of Rhode Island has won a $1M Lowe’s Foundation Gable Grant to expand its Electrical Apprenticeship and Ready to Build programs at Knight Campus in Warwick. The grant will let the college build two new lab spaces and create a credit pathway to train more skilled workers.  Warwick Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Management Council voted Tuesday to give Quidnessett Country Club an extra 30 days to submit a new plan to restore its shoreline and remove the illegal sea wall after missing its July 10 deadline. The club has attempted to propose a plan six times and faces further enforcement if its solution for Type 1 waters fails to meet the rules — critics worry that its use of non-biodegradable TrapBag may harm the coastal habitat.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Plan Commission held a site visit in Fiskeville last Thursday to review a proposed 44-lot subdivision that has raised concerns over potential flooding, sewer access, and traffic on Vaughn Lane and Wini Street — more than 30 local residents spoke at the meeting, and the review’s 90-day deadline is extended until Oct. 12 with a follow-up hearing set for Aug. 5.  Cranston Herald

  • Longtime high school basketball coach Steve Ceseretti died Friday at 82 after 16 years at Bishop Hendricken, where he led his teams to three state championships with an old-school style that built lasting trust; calling hours are held today while his funeral will be on Thursday.  The Providence Journal
