CRIME NEWS

  • A temporary custodian for Warwick schools turned himself in to police on July 14 after cameras caught him taking 10 Chromebooks from Robertson Elementary School on June 17 — police recovered nine devices and charged 53-year-old Luis Calcano Acevedo with felony larceny while one Chromebook remains missing.  Warwick Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In early June, DEM marine biologist Katie Rodrigue surveyed horseshoe crab numbers at Conimicut Point in Warwick + measured and tagged the crabs before releasing them to track their decline, which has affected their use in biomedical research and bait.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local election officials received praise from the General Assembly as a law signed on June 26 now protects them by imposing strict penalties for threats—they also helped pass bills that modernize elections and ease voting processes to save taxpayer money. The measures ensure that poll workers can serve safely and efficiently during elections.  Warwick Online
  • On July 16, the Rhode Island attorney general's office sent interrogatories to 13 companies linked to the Washington Bridge—questioning if they knew about corrosion, voids, and design issues before its emergency closure. The defendants must respond within 40 days.  The Providence Journal
  • Governor Dan McKee will sign an executive order declaring the 36th Governor’s Bay Day on Sunday, July 27 — the order will grant free parking at state beaches, a free round-trip fare on the South County Express Beach Bus, and allow fishing without a license from Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27.  WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • The District 3 champion Warwick North 10-U All-Star team lost its state tournament games last Saturday when it fell 9 to 1 to Cranston Western in the opening round and 10 to 6 to Darlington American in the losers bracket — manager Bryan Conley said the team gained valuable experience and will work hard during the offseason to defend its district title next year. The team, which united a group of talented players, now looks ahead to future challenges and improvements.  Warwick Online
