- ➤ Despite smoky skies this week, people came from across Rhode Island to National Night Out at Rocky Point Park on Tuesday evening where they enjoyed a rock-climbing wall, bouncy houses, face painting, local food trucks, and music; Warwick and Cranston police departments also showcased a Jaws of Life demonstration — the night ended with a fireworks show that lit up the sky. - ➤ Pilgrim High School seniors are honored as Community Champions in a special send-off that reflects their leadership and unique high school experience during social distancing — they shared key advice with younger students to guide them in the future. Warwick Online
- ➤ On July 14, a tractor trailer delivered 40,000 pounds (128 pallets) of food to West Bay Marketplace in Warwick to help families facing food insecurity. Local volunteers and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints coordinated the effort to support a pantry (serving 500 to 600 households weekly). Warwick Online
- ➤ Warwick North and Warwick Continental American Challenger teams played their final game last week to wrap up another summer season of fun. - ➤ Two men were charged in an investigation into misbranded drugs imported from India and sold as an all-natural supplement for erectile dysfunction — 74-year-old Jitender Behl of East Greenwich is accused of repackaging hundreds of thousands of pills while 58-year-old Mahr Ahmed of Attleboro was charged for distributing them through his Providence-based company Noor Inc., and Ahmed agreed to plead guilty. - ➤ The Washington County Fair returns next week in Richmond for five days of rides, livestock shows and country music. It will run from Aug. 13th to Aug. 17th with gates opening at 8 a.m.—general admission is $12 while kids 10 and under enter free. Johnston SunRise
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After more than a year of renovations, Holliman Elementary has reopened for students on the first day of school today. The $7.5-million project—completed ahead of schedule with a temporary move to Gorton—featured a new HVAC system, complete asbestos removal, modernized classrooms, and updated facilities by local contractor Ahlborg Construction on Centreville Road. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Last week, the EPA proposed that the Clean Air Act does not let the agency set rules on greenhouse gas emissions—local experts warned that warmer waters are already shifting fish populations. The Department of Environmental Management will hold a marine fisheries workshop on Aug 25 at 5 p.m. at URI Bay Campus to gather input on new penalties for violations. Cranston Herald
