COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In Cranston, Mayor Ken Hopkins visited the Cranston Street McDonald’s for its grand re-opening and backpack giveaway that ran Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In Warwick, the Impossible Dream Center hosted a resource fair and backpack event for students with disabilities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — local organizations provided education, health and employment services.  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • D’Maury Monteiro did not fight extradition and came to court at Kent County District Court in Warwick Friday at 2 p.m. after he was accused of shooting 16-year-old Eduardo Colon in a Cranston parking lot on August 11 at about 3 a.m.—he ran away in a stolen car and was later caught in Dorchester.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s first roller coaster was an inclined railway built in 1872 at Rocky Point Amusement Park in Warwick—costing 10 cents for a ride—and later replaced by a Figure 8 coaster before the park closed in 1994. Today, the old park grounds serve as Rocky Point State Park, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.  The Providence Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Washington Trust Company rang the NASDAQ bell on Friday to mark its 225th birthday—its history beginning in Westerly on August 22, 1800—and now employs over 650 workers across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island now requires titles for all out-of-state vehicles, including those model years 2000 and older, and owners must submit required documents, complete a VIN inspection, and pay a fee at the Cranston DMV following changes effective Jan. 1, 2024. Owners may apply in person by appointment, mail their documents, or drop them off during business hours — each option meets the new state guidelines.  The Providence Journal
  • Gov. Dan McKee signed six bills into law on Friday afternoon to spur housing development in Rhode Island — the bills cover electric permitting, attached units, co-living housing and the creation of a land bank, with House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and other leaders present.  WJAR
  • CCRI has hired former Pawtucket Police Chief Paul King as its new Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police effective August 25 — he will oversee safety on all campuses and guide emergency planning.  Warwick Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Union workers at Butler Hospital signed a new four-year contract and are getting ready to return to work — letters with details were mailed Tuesday and more instructions will arrive soon.  ABC 6
