CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Theatre by the Sea is showing Heartbreak Hotel — a high-energy musical about Elvis Presley that ends the summer season and will run until September 14. Joe Hebel leads the cast as they bring lively music and dancing to the stage. Johnston SunRise
- ➤ West Place Animal Sanctuary will host Fall Visitors Weekend with guided tours offering a close look at rescued farm animals such as alpacas, emus, and pigs as well as a special life-sized baby elephant crafted by an indigenous artisan. The event will also celebrate the historic home's 150th anniversary and the sanctuary's 18th birthday – funds raised will benefit the rescued animals. Warwick Online
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ The Powerball drawing held Wednesday night featured an $815 million jackpot—its 7th largest in history—with a cash option of $367.9 million available if won. Tickets in Rhode Island closed at 9:50 p.m. and the drawing ended at 10:59 p.m. WJAR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Dan McKee and RIPTA leaders have introduced a new budget plan that avoids deep cuts and raises transit revenue to help fix the agency's large deficit ahead of a board vote on Sept. 27—if approved, weekend and off-peak service will change. Some riders and advocates say the plan leaves RIPTA on life support and may hurt service in the long run. Warwick Online
- ➤ Today, 24 new speed cameras were installed in 11 school zones and will operate from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days with a 30-day grace period for warnings before $50 fines start Sept 29—new cameras on school buses will also monitor drivers passing stopped buses with flashing lights. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ This summer, two former Bishop Hendricken baseball players, Brandyn Durand and Jack LaRose, played with the Ocean State Waves to face tough college competition while staying near home. Durand, now at Bryant, hit well after his summer adventure and LaRose, at UConn, returned to the field after an elbow injury—both set to boost their teams next season. Warwick Online
- ➤ The Cranston Western Little League 8-U team won the Sally Eddy Tournament at Warwick North after winning all four games in the tourney. The young team played in three tournaments this summer and finished with a 9-2 record as a true friendship team. Cranston Herald
