- ➤ John V. Welch was a longtime educator and community volunteer in Warwick who led local schools and served as a Russian linguist in the Army—he was known for his support in local programs and his active role in community life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 2 at St’s Rose & Clement Church, and he is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Warwick Online
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island launched a certification process for social equity candidates to open cannabis retail stores. Applicants need to prove their eligibility and submit an interest form by Sept 24—applications will then be accepted until Sept 29 for a lottery of six reserved licenses. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Services for Judge Frank Caprio began at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul at 10 a.m. Friday as family, friends, and local officials gathered to honor his 40-year career on the bench—he was known as Americas nicest judge. His legacy of kindness and fairness touched many in Rhode Island. ABC 6
- ➤ Labor Day traffic is expected to be heavy as many drivers face crowded roads and busy air travel, and experts advise checking vehicles and planning safe rides. Today, a BAT Mobile is stationed at J.F. Kennedy Elementary School in Middletown from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. — state and local police will look for impaired drivers while RIDOT work may change road routes. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ The City Council approved a five-year tax treaty for Jan Companies to develop 170 apartments on the vacant lot on Post Rd — a move designed to keep the lot from being sold to RIAC. The plan, which includes 38 affordable units, remains in early stages as developers assess supply challenges before construction begins. Warwick Online

- ➤ The Providence Journal sports staff completed selecting its Quarter Century All State Football Team defense from the 2000s — naming top Rhode Island high school players for their standout efforts.
