ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A boat was grounded at Oakland Beach in Warwick on Monday afternoon—police, the Coast Guard and the Harbormaster responded while crews continued monitoring the vessel and a salvage company is set to remove it later this week. WJAR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ URI’s Shark Camp aboard the research vessel Cap’n Bert takes 16 Rhode Island students on a five-day trip in Narragansett Bay—where they learn to trawl for marine creatures and sort species for data collection—under the guidance of Professor Dr. Brad Wetherbee and Captain Steve Barber. ABC 6
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ URI marine biologists and students are tagging 150 mako sharks along the Rhode Island coast to track their movements and help conserve the species—this project uses satellite transmitters and special gear to study the sharks safely and effectively. ABC 6
- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said spotted lanternflies are damaging vineyards and orchards and urged residents to stomp on the insects and their egg masses—officials noted heavy infestations in Providence County. WJAR
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Although school starts in September, Rhode Island locals will enjoy a second summer as crowds thin after Labor Day, letting them bike on trails, visit beaches, shop at farmers’ markets, join local festivals—like PVDFest on Sept. 5—and go whale watching.
