  • A Smithfield man with a passion for photography began a small business after a 2019 class revealed his talent—Bryan Baron now sells his photos at local markets and shops, inspiring others with his work.  WJAR

CRIME NEWS

  • Rhode Island State Police arrested 21 drivers for DUI during Labor Day weekend — they used the BAT Mobile on Friday and Saturday to catch impaired drivers, investigate 63 crashes and issue 377 traffic citations.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trinity Rep has begun selling tickets for its 49th annual performance of A Christmas Carol and will stage the show at the Dowling Theater from Nov. 6 to Dec. 31 — tickets must be ordered online or by phone as the ticket office is under construction.  WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Governor McKee—education commissioner Infante-Green launched the Attendance Matters RI campaign in Providence as schools from several districts begin their new year, and officials aim to further reduce chronic absenteeism after an 11 percent drop in class cutting from last year. The event highlights renewed efforts to keep students in class as learning resumes across the region.  ABC 6
  • The Warwick Center for the Arts will open its annual showcase of works by Rhode Island art educators on September 5 and run through October 3 at 3259 Post Road in Apponaug — the gallery will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and program coordinator Aileen Quinn is preparing for the display.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school teams across Rhode Island began their fall sports season on September 2 with varied wins and losses in soccer, field hockey, tennis and volleyball — coaches are reminded to send game results by 10 p.m. for recaps.  The Providence Journal
