BUSINESS NEWS

  • Providence meteorologist Kelly Bates lost her job at ABC6 on September 11 when new owners cut staff—she said several colleagues were affected and she is now looking for work while urging others to consider hiring experienced ABC6 talent. Bates, known for her Emmy nominations and long career in weather reporting, left on difficult terms after a decision that followed a change in station ownership.  The Providence Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown was named a top peaceful fall foliage spot by Yankee Magazine because of its scenic views and diverse wildlife. Covering 325 acres, the site features 7 miles of trails—one of which is ADA-accessible—and charges entry fees from $3 to $7.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state approved its 10-year transportation plan on Sept. 11 that allocates $11.5 billion to roads and bridges—critics say it falls short on transit and climate goals. Attorney General Peter Neronha and local groups called for funds to be reallocated to improve public transit and lower emissions.  The Providence Journal
  • On Sept. 12, a large crowd gathered outside the Rhode Island State House to hold a vigil for conservative activist Charlie Kirk—shot and killed at a college event in Utah on Sept. 11—and authorities confirmed a suspect is in custody.  WJAR
