ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • URI graduate Jake Bonney was skiing in Maine on January 14 when he hit ice and crashed into a tree—he was left paralyzed but his training as an underwater drone pilot helped him call 911 and begin therapy so he can continue operating ROVs to search for shipwrecks.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday night, September 25, NBC 10 Sunrise Anchor Mario Hilario was inducted into the Rhode Island Radio and Television Hall of Fame—he has worked at NBC 10 for nearly 30 years and moved from Weekend Sunrise to the weekday team.  WJAR
  • Guy Fieri visited 10 Rhode Island restaurants on 'Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives'—including favorites like Crazy Burger Cafe and Juice Bar and Aunt Carrie's—and noted that some venues have closed or changed, such as Edgewood Cafe now replaced by Ming's Asian Street Food.  The Providence Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two meteor showers will light the night sky in October and people in Warwick can watch them from dark areas. The Orionids run from Oct.2 to Nov.12 with the best view on Oct.22—23 while the Draconids peak on the evening of Oct.8 into early Oct.9 with about 5 to 10 meteors per hour.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DMV said that Rhode Island’s blue wave plates were replaced with new ocean plates at the end of 2024, and vehicles with the old plates will not pass inspection—drivers must email the Plate Office if they still use them.  The Providence Journal
  • A government shutdown may begin on Oct. 1 as Congress fails to agree on federal funding, and many federal workers could be furloughed. Rhode Island officials have prepared for potential disruptions—such as cuts to state-funded programs—and urge residents to follow official updates.  The Providence Journal
  • The Warwick Schools Budget Commission said lax fiscal controls caused deficits of $1.2M in FY23/24, $5M in FY25 and $2.2M in FY26. The city will review proposals that include stronger oversight and a payment plan to cover the FY25 deficit in $1M installments starting in FY27—aiming to fix ongoing financial issues.  Warwick Post
  • Travel lanes on New London Avenue at the Route 37 overpass have been reduced from two to one in each direction through November for a bridge replacement—lane closures on I-295 in Cranston, Johnston, and Warwick will alternate from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights to support electrical work, road construction, and milling.  Johnston SunRise
  • Starting Monday, Sept. 29 at 7 a.m., speed-tracking cameras in 11 school zones will ticket drivers going more than 10 mph above the limit with a $50 fine — the cameras were installed in August after a one-month warning period and run on school days from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Warwick Online
  • Helena Foulkes spoke to the Warwick Rotary Club on Sept. 11 and said that with Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi they could work together to fix state issues—she noted that the state must repair the Washington Bridge faster and improve rules on opioids, education, and health care. Foulkes, who declared her candidacy on Sept. 9 after a close primary loss in 2022, said she will hold state agencies and businesses more accountable.  Warwick Online

  • State leaders celebrated new middle-income apartments at The Presley on Post Road on Thursday—site of the former Sheraton Hotel—and offered 190 units for families earning between $64,000 and $96,000; half of the units are leased and officials expect to rent the rest within the next two months.  WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Rhode Island men's basketball announced that Tim Martin Jr. has committed to the team for the 2026-27 season. He is a 6-foot-7 wing from Cincinnati who beat out offers from Miami Ohio and Western Carolina, giving the team a boost as they plan to replace several older players.  The Providence Journal
  • College basketball season is set to start as Atlantic-10 Media Day is held on October 7 at Capital One Arena and Big East Media Day is scheduled for October 21 at Madison Square Garden—coach Bruce Pearl has retired amid shifts in the sport. Local teams and fans are watching closely as key moves continue in college and pro athletics.  The Providence Journal
  • The Providence Journal sports team from 75 Fountain St. has released its Week 3 high school football picks with predictions from Bill Koch, Jacob Rousseau, Eric Rueb and Bill Corey—experts who aim to win bragging rights this season. The picks cover matchups such as Classical at Chariho and Cranston West at St. Raphael, setting up important games for local teams.  The Providence Journal
