- ➤ St. Mary’s Church in Knightsville hosted a three-day Italian festival last weekend as part of its 100th celebration, with live music, Italian food, and fun activities for families. City Councilman Richard Campopiano said he planned the event for months — using local vendors and family recipes to keep the tradition alive. Cranston Herald

- ➤ Warwick’s Gamm Theatre presents Angels in America, Part 2: Perestroika, a play that follows complex characters battling the AIDS crisis with bold acting and evocative stage design. The play runs through October 12 and lasts three hours with two intermissions—offering a moving blend of tragedy and humor for local audiences. Warwick Post

- ➤ RI's Atlantic Shark Institute recorded for the first time a juvenile great white shark near Block Island using a baited underwater camera system in 45 feet of water. The rare video will help scientists learn more about the elusive species — a discovery that marks a first in state waters. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Sen. Todd M. Patalano received the Governmental Service Award for his bill that created a PURPLE Alert system to help find missing adults with disabilities — U.S. Sen. Jack Reed presented the award at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence on Sept. 26. Cranston Herald
- ➤ Social Security is sending SSI payments today — retirement benefits are scheduled for Oct. 8, 15, and 22 as recipients now must use direct deposit or a Direct Express card due to a new paperless policy. More than 200,000 local beneficiaries depend on these checks and are advised to wait three extra mailing days before contacting the agency if payments are delayed. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Rhode Island law forbids smoking or vaping marijuana in any public place that bans tobacco use (including bars, museums, malls) and towns may impose extra fines for breaking this rule. Adults must be 21 to legally possess or grow small amounts at home. The Providence Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo will hold a joint press conference Friday to warn that federal cuts to health care assistance—such as premium tax credits that help Rhode Islanders afford insurance—may leave many without coverage if the credits expire Dec. 31. Health leaders have pledged to fight the cuts in Washington, saying that rising costs will strain the system and endanger lives. Cranston Herald
- ➤ Kent Hospital earned a prestigious elderly surgical certificate by receiving Geriatric Surgery Verification — the only community hospital in New England with the honor. Dr. Melissa Murphy and her team improved pre-surgery care by screening nutrition, mobility, cognition and social support and will expand the program to patients 65 and older when approvals are complete. - ➤ Warwick's Harbor Lights marina and golf course was sold to an undisclosed buyer as Monument Marine Group refined its growth strategy and prepared to reinvest in target markets. The 70 waterfront acres, which includes 208 boat slips, a nine hole golf course, an infinity pool and event space, was previously owned by ex-Gov. Philip Noel's family. The Providence Journal
