COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RI Community Food Bank CEO Melissa Cherney visited Westbay Community Action in Warwick last Tuesday to meet with staff and discuss plans to fight hunger in the area. She said her visit is the start of a statewide tour—Westbay Marketplace now serves about 100 families each day.  Warwick Online
  • Warwick Center for the Arts will host a collage art workshop on Friday, October 17 (2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at (3259 Post. Rd.) where participants must bring scissors and extra paper or use provided images, and a $10 fee will be collected by the instructor.  Warwick Online
  • On Saturday at 5 a.m. the lower level of the Gov. Bruce Sundlun Terminal at Green Airport was filled with noise as Honor Flight Justice departed for a visit to war memorials in Washington, D.C. The flight was sponsored by RI District Court Chief Justice Jeanne LaFazia and her husband in memory of Raymond A. LaFazia—featuring 75 veterans led by 106-year-old WWII veteran William McClintick amid cheers from family, friends, police and firefighters.  Warwick Online

  • Today the Neon Marketplace at Airport and Post roads in Warwick is now a Cumberland Farms after EG America leased nine of the ten locations in May. EG Group said the move—supporting its long-term growth plans—will strengthen its brand across the region.  Warwick Online
  • A new reptile shop called ET Reptiles opened at 909 Warwick Ave. in Gold Plaza on Sept 20—co-owned by Emily Arpin and Taylor Faria, it aims to change how people view reptiles by selling supplies, offering pets, and hosting community events including movie nights and educational encounters.  Warwick Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Opening Reception for the 39th Annual Rhode Island Open Juried Exhibition will be held on October 9 from 6 to 7:30 pm and is free and open to the public with light refreshments and remarks and award presentations by the juror and WCFA staff. The exhibition will run from October 8 to November 21 and will let local artists show their new original works.  Johnston SunRise

  • Travelers at Bruce Sundlun Terminal are noticing improvements as the Rhode Island Airport Corporation begins a $64 million update to replace carpeting with terracotta flooring and add new lights, ticket counters, and seating areas—phased work is designed to keep traffic moving during construction.  Warwick Online

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kent Hospital held its annual Evening of Hope event at the Dunes Club in Narragansett where over 300 people gathered to raise more than $269,000 to upgrade its Emergency Department with newer equipment and better care — the fundraiser also honored Edward J. Cooney Jr. as Outstanding Philanthropist and Jinen Thakkar, MD for Community Care.  Warwick Online

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Betty, 94, and Rose, 95, met earlier this year during a tea gathering arranged by friends and began a warm friendship by sharing family memories and stories. They compared details of their pasts and will plan a November birthday party—showing that new bonds can form at any age.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • Captain Dave Monti said tautog fishing is strong after he tested three spots on Saturday in Narragansett Bay and caught fish up to 20 inches near a mussel bed in water 20 feet deep. Fishing rules allow three fish per person with a 16 inch minimum until Oct. 14—after which anglers can catch more fish.  Warwick Online
  • The Toll Gate boys soccer team is pushing for the top seed in Division III playoffs with a perfect 6-0 league record and a strong defense that allowed only five goals this season - coach Jason Melo said the team built on last season's turnaround with experienced seniors and veteran juniors as they prepare for tougher matchups ahead.  Warwick Online
