Good morning, Warwick. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washington Trust is sponsoring free financial education materials and interactive training for 29 public middle and high schools across Rhode Island for the fourth consecutive year—teachers will access digital courses, interactive coaching, and online resources that meet state academic standards.  Johnston SunRise
  • Rhode Island students saw slight improvements in test scores as grades three to eight increased nearly 3 percent in ELA and over 1 percent in math — high school SAT scores also grew nearly 2 percent while chronic absenteeism fell by 2.6 percent. High school ELA proficiency reached over 51 percent compared to 2019 levels.  ABC 6
  • Staff and students at St. Rocco’s School surprised longtime director Robin Okolowitcz on her last day before retirement last week—she was honored with a school chorus performance, a hall of fame handprint, flowers, and many handmade cards that showed her care for the school.  Johnston SunRise

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting this month, Rhode Island is collecting a 7% sales tax on short-term parking in garages and lots statewide — extra fees that will affect trips downtown, the airport, and the beach. The revenue goes to the state general fund to support services like public safety, education, and infrastructure.  WJAR
  • A government shutdown began on Oct. 1 that closed non-essential federal services—yet the Rhode Island DMV remained open because it is state funded. Local offices should be contacted for any schedule changes.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island lawmakers plan a third oversight hearing on Washington Bridge even though an ongoing lawsuit keeps some topics off limits; Gov. McKee supports the review while legislators debate whether to require testimony under oath—an approach that Attorney General Neronha warned may risk the legal case. The hearing will address transparency and accountability on the bridge while legal constraints persist.  WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a joint press conference on October 2, 2025, Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo warned that looming federal cuts to health care assistance—ending premium help—could harm many Rhode Islanders.  Johnston SunRise
