COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The staff and clients at St. Elizabeth Community Memory Care Center in Warwick Neck celebrated Ruthie Belcher’s 100th birthday on Sept. 16 with a lunch featuring fried chicken, corn bread, and a giant cake. Program director Linda Sinnott shared Ruthie’s pearls of wisdom while Mayor Frank Picozzi marked the occasion with a proclamation and Ruthie expressed her wish to give others good health.  Warwick Online
  • T.F. Green Airport in Warwick was ranked among the top ten airports by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards— it was named the best airport in New England and placed eighth among U.S. airports. This marks its sixth year on the list.  ABC 6
  • House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi joined the fifth Shekarchi Scramble at Topgolf in Cranston last Tuesday to raise funds for animal rescue services in the area. The event started with an 18-hole play at Quidnessett Country Club and continued with a dinner and awards, drawing about 250 people to support the Warwick Animal Shelter, West Place Animal Sanctuary, and Anchor Paws.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rhode Island College will hold its fourth annual Apply to RIC for Free Day on Oct. 15 to waive the $50 application fee for all Rhode Island students applying for fall and spring 2026 programs. Applicants can start their forms in advance and must submit on Oct. 15 to benefit from the fee waiver.  Warwick Online

FINANCE NEWS

  • Warwick’s David Covais won $20,000 playing the 'Lucky Coins' eInstant game today after he received bonus money from a lottery giveaway—he said he may take a trip to Disney with his daughter but might delay plans because his family just got a new puppy.  Warwick Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Activist Nicole Jellinek announced her run for House District 67 on Oct. 8—two days after her husband Rep. Jason Knight launched his attorney general campaign—and she will share more details next week; she is known for her role in the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act and for surviving a 1994 Planned Parenthood clinic shooting.  The Providence Journal
  • The Warwick School Committee requested $2.1 million from the city in a letter sent Wednesday to Mayor Frank Picozzi, city council, and the school budget commission to balance the budget after making all possible cost cuts—Mayor Picozzi said the city might alternatively add the amount to the deficit without a direct appropriation.  WJAR
  • Today, U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner visited Kent’s Hospital at Home program that improved patient recovery and freed hospital beds until a government shutdown paused the program—forcing all 10 patients to return to the hospital. He said cuts to Medicaid and ACA help will increase health care costs and strain emergency services.  Warwick Online
  • A special House commission—formed to study flooding on the Pawtuxet River—met on Sept 30 at the State House conference room, and its members began reviewing past flood events and planning future public input. Chaired by Rep. Earl A. Read III, the commission will propose solutions by March 2 and hold a follow-up meeting on Oct 29.  Warwick Online
  • Legislative leaders will hold an oversight hearing in November on Gov. Dan McKee’s handling of the westbound Washington Bridge shutdown and plan to put state workers under oath—House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi and Senate President Valarie Lawson met today after a 64-page report showed faults with the bridge. The hearing comes as state officials dispute the plan amid an ongoing lawsuit and work to rebuild the bridge is set to begin.  Warwick Online
