CRIME NEWS

  • Brightstar reported a data breach that affected over 6,000 Rhode Islanders after an unauthorized party accessed its systems on November 17 — the company sent a letter to the Attorney General’s Office to notify those affected and will offer credit monitoring.  WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Warwick Historical Society and state photographer Chester Browning will give a free presentation on the history of T. F. Green Airport from 1931 to 1996 at the Warwick Public Library on October 15 at 7 p.m.—the talk will cover the airport’s development, including the Governor Bruce G. Sundlun Terminal and smaller satellite airports in the state.  Warwick Online
  • The Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas will begin on Oct 17 at 8 p.m. and will air about 40 new movies and series every Friday through Monday until Dec 22— including 'A Newport Christmas', the first holiday film set in Newport that will air on Nov 2 at 8 p.m.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence said that six teachers resigned from St. Peter School in Warwick, where the school employs 20 to 25 teachers, leaving parents concerned about their children's education—officials have not explained the reasons for the resignations.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced that the new structural health monitoring system on Washington Bridge returned normal readings after several weeks of testing—200 sensors across 14 spans recorded safe movements and will alert officials to any unusual changes as a new bridge is built.  WJAR
  • Rhode Island law ensures our beaches are public from 10 feet above the high tide line to the water—visitors must avoid crossing private property to reach the shore.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island residents can request low-number license plates known as Governor’s Preferred plates by filling out the DMV application online or by mail—this form lets them choose specific low-digit combinations for passenger, commercial, motorcycle, and other vehicle types. Chuck Hollis, the assistant administrator of the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, confirmed that all residents are eligible to apply.  The Providence Journal

  • Chocolate Delicacy in Warwick has been named the best and most iconic candy store in Rhode Island by Tasting Table for its friendly atmosphere and excellent selection of treats — the shop offers Rhode Island-themed candies and a variety of sweets that delight locals.  The Providence Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Burrillville’s Conjuring house will not go to auction because Needham Bank sold its mortgage loan—Jason Hawes, a Warwick man from Ghost Hunters who had launched a GoFundMe to keep the house accessible, said the buyer remains unknown.  ABC 6

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island high school football Week 5 saw wins on Thursday and Friday in games featuring teams like North Smithfield and Central Falls—while the Saturday game between Woonsocket and Burrillville will be played tomorrow at noon. Coaches are reminded to send in final scores by 10 p.m.  The Providence Journal
  • Thursday's high school sports games in Rhode Island delivered close wins in field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball with teams such as South Kingstown and Lincoln School posting key scores—Friday's schedule now offers many contests including football, volleyball and tennis starting as early as 3 p.m.  The Providence Journal
