COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women’s Wilderness Weekend will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, October 18 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Episcopal Conference Center with a cookout, nature hikes, kayaking, decoupage & ornament classes for a $25 fee, offering a slideshow and sessions that welcome both old and new participants.  Warwick Post
  • Rhode Island farmer Joe Jutras of Scituate broke the world record for a green squash weighing 2,200 pounds when he was honored at the 2025 Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh Off at Frerichs Farm — the squash will be on display at the Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular every night until Nov. 2.  ABC 6
  • McAuley Ministries has helped the most vulnerable in our community for over 50 years by providing food, shelter, clothing & support through programs that have served over 2 million meals and aided 1,000 families toward independence. The organization will soon expand its childcare center with three new classrooms to serve up to 50 more children.  The Providence Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • TF Green International Airport in Warwick was named a Top 3 winner of the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice award for Best Small Airport—marking its 20th top ten honor since 2017 and making it the highest placing New England airport.  ABC 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former NFL coach Jon Gruden will teach a Bryant University class via Zoom after former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria (who now teaches in the Sports Industries program) invited him to be a guest teacher. Gruden shared a video showing Bryant gear and school trivia and said he is excited to meet the students.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Peter Neronha filed a lawsuit on May 27 against CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, and Optum Rx—saying their unfair pricing practices force local pharmacies like Suburban Pharmacy to take payments too low to cover costs, which limits patient options. Local pharmacist Nick Shanos noted that these predatory practices have hurt independent pharmacies and their patients for decades.  Warwick Online
  • Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos hosted the kickoff event for the 23rd annual Operation Holiday Cheer donation drive at the Rhode Island State House—she was joined by groups such as Rhode Island Blue Star Moms and the Rhode Island National Guard. The drive provided hundreds of care packages for service members who spent the holidays away from home.  WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kent Hospital has received the Geriatric Surgery Verification certificate from the American College of Surgeons—making it the only community hospital in New England with the award—and has set up a program to help patients 75 and older get safer surgeries by using a special screening process. Dr. Melissa Murphy and her team plan to extend the program to patients 65 and older as they fine-tune the new system.  Warwick Online

  • Pilgrim football lost 26-7 to East Greenwich last week as its five-game losing streak grew and key underclassmen gained valuable play time. The Pats will face first-place Classical on the road & remain confident they can pull off an upset.  Warwick Online
