COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roberta Zimmerly from Cranston and her cousin Mary Wayss of Warwick took part in the annual Spooky Paddle on Oct 19 in Wickford Harbor—supporting the North Kingstown Food Pantry.  Cranston Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Filmmaker Ken Burns will premiere his six-part documentary series The American Revolution on PBS on November 17. The series—highlighting Rhode Island’s role in the war—uses reenactments, historical paintings and narration by well-known actors to tell the nation’s founding story.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Diocese of Providence finished its review of St. Peter School and found no evidence of wrongdoing, making principal Denise Acala eligible for reinstatement + she chose to step aside and join Bishop McVinney School in Providence. Interim principal Kevin Peloquin stayed on while a search for a new leader will begin soon + her administrative leave began on Oct. 13 after six teachers resigned.  WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has lasted twenty-two days and local agencies in Warwick are keeping services running amid warnings that SNAP benefits will stop in November—if the shutdown continues—local officials fear a surge in demand for food assistance. Social services like heating and food pantries currently operate as usual, but prolonged delays in federal funding may soon strain support for low-income families.  Cranston Herald
  • Rhode Island is now spending its $120 million housing bond approved last November to build new homes and repair existing properties. The Executive Office of Housing has accepted applications for programs offering up to $8 million for infrastructure and $1 million for municipal work—applications for a $66 million tranche will start Oct 23.  The Providence Journal
