COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rocky Point Farm kicked off its annual pumpkin walk for Halloween with a half-mile illuminated path that featured over 200 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns—transforming the farm into a spooky venue. Co-owners Nancy, Stephen, and Sonya, along with community helpers and local teens, guided families who enjoyed the event from Thursday to Sunday.  Warwick Online
  • Renovation work began on Pawtuxet Baptist Church’s 150-foot steeple—an important piece of local history—using a rope-and-harness system to repair decades of weather damage, with support from a Champlin Foundation grant and community donations after years of planning.  Warwick Online
  • Bill O'Donnell (a former SNAP corrective-action officer) now chairs the Gaspee Plateau Scouts troop committee and led about 60 scouts and volunteers across 26 routes in the Pawtuxet-Gaspee area to launch the annual Scouting for Food drive aimed at helping families when monthly food benefits are delayed on Nov. 1. Scouts will collect nonperishable items such as canned tuna, peanut butter, soups, cereals and vegetables on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 9 a.m.  Warwick Online

  • Noon designs will leave its Pawtuxet Village location by year’s end after 11 years due to a rent increase following the building’s sale to Anthony Albanese — owners Nora Roberts and Maie Vaga plan to stay open until year-end and search for a new space, with plans to add a location in Charleston — as they work to keep serving local customers.  Warwick Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Oct. 16 meeting, the School Committee approved the use of bond funds for several district construction projects set to begin next summer—these projects include upgrades at Pilgrim, Toll Gate and other sites. John Bates of LeftField noted that steel installation at Toll Gate will start in December while committee members recalled that 74% of voters backed the bonds in November 2020.  Warwick Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 7,300 Warwick residents will lose SNAP benefits on November 1 due to a federal freeze in food aid, forcing many to rely on local food pantries. Community organizations such as St. Mark’s Episcopal Church are urging donations—hoping to meet rising food needs.  Warwick Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Toll Gate field hockey team won 7 to 0 over Woonsocket/Burrillville last week and advanced to the semifinals for the third straight season. They faced second-seeded Classical in Cumberland last night—final results were not reported.  Warwick Online
  • Johnston's football team moved into second place after beating Pilgrim 43-7 last week and will face first-place Classical in a winner-take-all matchup in Providence this Saturday afternoon. The Panthers built a 28-7 lead by halftime and showed strong plays on both offense and defense.  Johnston SunRise
